How Long Does CPR Certification Actually Take?

Thinking about getting certified but not sure what it involves? Here's an honest breakdown of how long CPR certification takes and what happens during the class.

By Richard Brown, RN (BSN) · Owner & Instructor, Rich In Health LLC

The short answer: one day

For the vast majority of people, CPR certification is a single-day commitment. Depending on the course and the size of your group, the class itself usually runs a few hours — long enough to actually learn and practice the skills, short enough that it fits into a normal day.

You don't leave with 'homework' or a multi-week program. You leave certified, the same day.

What actually happens in the class

A good CPR class is mostly hands-on. After a brief, plain-English overview of what happens during cardiac arrest, you spend most of the time practicing on manikins — compressions, rescue breaths, using an AED, and clearing an airway when someone is choking.

  • A short 'why it matters' overview
  • Hands-on compressions and breaths (adult, child, infant)
  • AED and choking response practice
  • A straightforward skills check
  • Your certification, issued the same day

Why hands-on time matters

The reason the class isn't just a 20-minute video is simple: in a real emergency, you fall back on what your hands have actually done, not what you watched. Real practice with coaching is what makes the skill stick — and it's why we train until you can genuinely perform, not just pass.
