What Manual Lymphatic Drainage Actually Is (and Isn't)

Manual lymphatic drainage is the most commonly mis-sold treatment in the wellness industry. It is also genuinely effective when it is the real thing, so it is worth knowing how to tell.

The pressure is the tell

Lymphatic vessels sit immediately beneath the skin and they are delicate. Real MLD uses very light, slow, rhythmic strokes — light enough that people who booked expecting a massage are often surprised. If it feels like deep tissue work, it is not lymphatic drainage, whatever the menu called it.

The order matters more than the technique

Trained practitioners clear the terminus at the neck first, then the trunk, then the limb. Pushing fluid toward a route that has not been opened does nothing. This sequencing is most of what a certification teaches, and it is invisible to a client who does not know to look for it.

Who it helps

Post-surgical swelling, lymphoedema, and general fluid retention are the mainstream uses. It is also used post-partum, particularly after a caesarean, with a provider's clearance.

Who should avoid it

Anyone with an active infection, untreated congestive heart failure, kidney failure, or a suspected blood clot. Moving fluid faster through a system that cannot handle it is not a neutral act — which is precisely why the intake conversation happens before anyone gets on the table.

How to check you are booking the real thing

Ask which technique the therapist is certified in. Vodder is the most widely recognised. "We offer lymphatic massage" is not an answer to that question.
